Three Ways to Care For Your Eyes | Vision Care
Our sight is one of our most important senses and without it, our lives simply won’t be the same. Even minor eye problems can put a major cramp on our daily lives. Have you ever tried to operate a computer or read a book with itchy eyes? It’s extremely frustrating!
Given how important it is for our eyes to be healthy, here are three ways to care for your eyes.
The Right Nutrients
The right diet is not only necessary for great looking skin, but also goes a long way in keeping your eyes healthy. Foods specifically great for your eyes are high with omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin C and E and zinc. Make sure fish, nuts, beans and citrus fruits are an integral part of your diet. When you’re in a rush or on a budget, carrots are a fantastic way to supercharge your eyes.
Get Your Eyesight Test Done Periodically
Schedule a visit with your ophthalmologist annually so that problems can be detected and treated early, well before they cause any serious damage. A regular eyesight test also tells you if your eyes are being put to excessive and unnecessary strain. Sometimes, all it takes to reduce the strain on your eyes is a small change in lifestyle or habits. As part of the overall checkup, your ophthalmologist may recommend a color vision test especially if there is a possibility of color blindness.
If you do not have an ophthalmologist, ask friends and family to recommend someone to you. You can also check for eye care clinics offering cheap eye exams to make your first visit a little lighter on the wallet! Please note, it is illegal to offer free eye exams anywhere in Canada, so don’t trust any optometry who market free vision care.
Protect Your Eyes From the Sun
Wearing sunglasses is not only cool and trendy, but it also serves a functional purpose in keeping your eyes protected. We all know that the sun’s UV rays can harm the skin, which is why we use sunscreen in the first place. However, we often ignore the fact that bright sunlight can damage our eyes. The proper sunglasses ensure that your eyes are protected from excessive UV rays, which can cause cataracts and other ailments.
You need to choose the right sunglasses to ensure that your eyes are fully protected. We wrote an article on how to choose the right sunglasses.
In short, choose sunglasses that block 99% to 100% UV and UVB rays. If you tend to drive a lot during daytime, you can choose polarized sunglasses as they keep glare to a minimum even if you are facing the sun directly while on the road.
